Tribute to ALHAJA

W

hen I was 28 years old as a youth, I had the opportunity to spend an evening with Alhaja Ayisat Ajoke in her life time at Egbeda, she was the kind of women you would want to be around and learn from.

She had been on more adventures. Loved more people, laughed at more things and fought more battles than you or I ever imagined. You probably know people who in their old age are not good old people. Because of their anger, bitterness and quilt, it is difficult to be around them. Not Alhaja Ajoke!

She was a good old woman, somebody who was sought out even in her old age. She told stories about the places she had seen and the things she had done.

She was a great leader and philanthropist who had a tremendous effect on her generation. With little energy she had then she continued to teach, “Little children and even adults to love one another”

There are many stories about Alhaja Ajoke Ayisat. In addition to what others said of her, listening to what others said to her memorable saying, listen to what she thought of herself in Yoruba language “Gbo temi mo ti e” (meaning: Listen to my words) Ti o ba se bi, to ngbadura, Adura e kole gba” (if you are doing evil, and praying, your prayer cannot be answer). What a privilege for me as a youth then to hear the wisdom of this good late old woman!

I hope you will take up the challenge too.
